Was really amused, in a way, to see how Kenya has been celebrating Obama's victory. To the Kenyans, and especially the Luo tribe (which is the biggest tribe in Kenya), they feel that Obama's one of theirs.
But the thing is, Obama's Kenya dad only saw his son once or twice after he was born, and Obama was raised up in the USA and Indonesia (4 years of school) for his whole life. I guess, in a way, the Indonesians played a bigger role in shaping Obama's life than the Kenyans did. :P
Anyway, I was very amused to read about how jubilant the Kenyans were. The question is, why so jubilant? Well, one reason is, of course, Obama does have Kenyan ancestry. But... another reason is because they're hoping for freebies and handouts since they feel that they now have someone on their side in the highest office in the USA.
And for Kenya, a place where connections still matter a great deal, what greater joy than having the ultimate connection in having "one of your own" as President of the USA?
Hmm. Something similar to how Sim Wong Hoo had to fly over to the USA to start his Creative business there. And then only after he succeeded there, then did we start saying that he's our son of Singapore, etc. etc.
Wow. Just a thought...
